History of Reiki

Mikao Usui

The traditional Reiki story begins in the mid 1800s with Mikao Usui, who was the principal of the Roshisha University in Kyoto, Japan and also a Christian minister. Asked by his students to be shown the method by which Jesus did healing, Usui began a ten year quest to find and learn the skill. When the Christian authorities in Japan told him that this healing was not talked about, much less known, Usui sought the information through Buddhism. Usui was told by Buddhist monks that the ancient spiritual healing methods had been lost and that the only way to approach them was by entering the Buddhist teachings, the path of enlightenment.

Mikao Usui then traveled to the United States, where he lived for seven years. When he received no further answer from the Christians here, he entered the University Of Chicago Divinity School. He is said to have received his Doctor of Theology Degree there, where he studied comparative religions and philosophies. He also learnt to read Sanskrit the ancient language of India and Tibet.

Buddha, the great savior of India was born in 620BC at a very young age escaped and chose path of homeless wanderer. He lived under trees, begged for food and meditated on how to prevent from sufferings of the people from poverty, illness, old age and relieve them out of pain and go toward enlightenment. Buddha discovered that attachment to earth things of people caused karma, which caused people to be re-born again and again, for the purpose of resolving the situations. Re-birth and living on the earth are the sources of human suffering and yet karma cannot be cleared except by incarnation and re-birth. This is the essence of Buddhist teaching. Buddhist teachings is based upon the animals, and loving, non attachment while helping others. To the Buddhist, healing much more than healing the body, as the mind and emotions must also be healed and healing must first of all be spiritual.

Mikao Usui returned to Japan with Sanskrit manuscript from the Buddha teaching. He took residence in a Zen Buddhist monastery . the script did not including however, information on how to active energy and make it work. Usui decided a three week period of meditation, fasting and prayers on Mt Koriyama in Japan. He piled 21 small stones in front of him to mark the time, throwing away one stone at the end of each day. On the 21st day, just before the dawn,  Usui  saw a projectile of light coming toward him. The light struck his third eye and lost consciousness for a time. Then he saw “millions and millions of rainbow bubbles and reiki symbols with bubbles. Along with that he was given information about the use of symbols and activation of the healing energy.

Buddha taught his disciples about healing energy “reiki”, but they took this  lightly. They started using this energy to fooling others, and misused it. As reiki has its own consciousness, it went inside earth, with the thought of not returning again, but Mikao Usui had been successful in bring the diving energy back on earth. The healing energy reiki is back with a purpose that no one can use to harm others.
